When I told folks I was going to work remotely from Bali for a month, a lot of them said they were jealous.
Good for them.
Jealousy tells us what we want.
If you feel any amount of jealousy when I talk about my trip...why?
- Is it because I'm in an exotic location?
- Because I'm alone?
- Because I'm able to work remotely?
C'mon, be specific.
What about my trip would you love? And how can you get some more of that?
(There are things I want more of, too.)
I understand it might not be easy to come to Bali for a month right now, but what's between all-or-nothing?
~ If you envy the travel... Montreal feels like France. You can visit eleven countries in one day at Epcot. The ethnic restaurants where you live can be transporting.
~ If you envy that I'm alone... It might be time for a bigger apartment. Or a weekend away. Or a gym with daycare.
~ If you envy that I can work from anywhere, what about remote work interests you?
- If you want more say over your schedule, could you ask to shift your hours?
- If you want more travel, does your company have another office where you could work for awhile?
- If you like the idea of owning your own business, could you start with a side hustle?
I talk to people all the time who don't want to feel "negative" emotions like jealousy, sadness, anger, and fear.
What if there was no such thing as a "negative" emotion?
What if feelings are simply signals?
Instead of trying to ignore them, smooth them over, or fake other feelings, what if you asked yourself why you feel the way you do?
If you know why, then you can do something about it.
Do you envy your boss who's going to retire early - or your cousin who can cook?
Do you envy your brother who moved to the city - or your sister who ran a 10K?
Do you envy your friend who has a date every weekend - or your neighbor who's house is always clean?
Jealousy tells you what you want more of.
What if you listened to it?
